A member state of the United States of America. Located in the south of the
country, next to the Gulf of Mexico, it covers an area of 125,675 km2
and has a population of 4,550,900 residents (2004). The climate is of a humid
subtropical type, explaining the violent tropical cyclones that sometimes hit
the coast between August and October. It is bathed in the south by the Gulf of
Mexico and abuts the states of Mississippi to the east, Arkansas to the north
and Texas to the west. The capital is the city of Baton Rouge. Louisiana
occupies the right bank of the lower Mississippi valley (the lower Mississippi)
and encompasses its immense delta (38 850 km ²).
The State extends over two regions: to the north, a sector of low hills
between 20 m and 50 m in altitude; to the south, a domain located at sea level,
poorly drained numerous bayous (relics of old Mississippi arms) and numerous
rambling rivers (Red, Ouachita, Atchafalaya). The region, moreover, is covered
with wood (50% of the total area) and swamps that protect alligators. The
lagoons, isolated by coastal ropes, were arranged to constitute a major waterway
between the Gulf of Mexico and the continent: the Gulf Intracoastal
Waterway; this, whose lowest points are below sea level, skirts the coast from
Texas to Florida and plays an important economic role. Mississippi natural
surveys protect populations, roads and cultures. The increased river
bed, important containment work (3 220 km of surveys) was carried out to protect
the plain against the floods of the Mississippi.

Louisiana is a state in the southern United States on the coast of the Gulf
of Mexico. The largest city is New Orleans and the most famous river is the
Mississippi, which flows into the sea here. Louisiana's heraldic bird is the
pelican, hence the nickname Pelican State.
Swamps and Coast - Wildlife and wide beaches
Inland Louisiana is a swampy area. Especially the deep south is criss-crossed
by many swamp areas. In the east of the state lies the Mississippi, which flows
into the Gulf of Mexico in the south. In addition to the Mississippi, the region
is also crossed by many other rivers. The other rivers also flow into the
Gulf. For example the Red River and the Ouachita River.
In the north of the country there is a higher area, which is not
characterized by swamps. The highest point here is Driskill Mountain at 163 m
above sea level.
Louisiana's coast is suffering from severe erosion. The beach is being worn
away faster here than in many other places in the world. Because of this
phenomenon, more and more people have to leave their old homes and move to the
hinterland. Scientists state that this phenomenon is mainly related to rising
sea levels.
The weather in Louisiana is characterized by a subtropical climate and
storms. The area is repeatedly hit by hurricanes. One major disaster was caused
by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Large parts of Louisiana were destroyed, and New
Orleans was also badly affected.
Louisiana's capital is not New Orleans but Baton Rouge to the north. The city
is much smaller than New Orleans, but is still Louisiana's second largest city.
Louisiana's history - upheavals and changes
The first Europeans in the region were the Spaniards. Hernando de Soto
explored the region for the crown. France occupied and claimed the area, naming
the colony Louisiana after their King Louis XIV.
In the Louisiana Purchase, the United States acquired the area and thus
expanded significantly. During the civil war the state belonged to the southern
states. Many plantation owners were positive about slavery and fought for the
preservation of the old order.
Louisiana produced many famous people. Louis Armstrong was born in New
Orleans in 1901. The city is considered the cradle of jazz. Other celebrities
include Reese Witherspoon and sisters Britney and Jamie Lynn Spears.
